Skype

The world has come a long way since the telegraph, phonograph, radio, and television. These communication technologies were invented to break barriers of communications. We are always finding ways to overcome distances and ways to communicate efficiently and effectively. The desire for progression in communication has led to the convergence of multimedia. “Resolving such performance gaps through a knowledge of business’s activities and a technology’s potential to facilitate these activities is likely to increase the search by both technology providers and users for relevant uses of new technologies, thus serving as a stimulus for innovation (“Information Technology Innovativeness”.) A prime example would be what is called Skype. What is Skype? It is a communication technology created to break down barriers to communication. Skype is a software application to communicate by voice calls, video calls, and chats over the Internet. This Internet based software allows people to make calls to phones, send text messages, send offline video messages, live video calls, instant messages, group conferences, and file sharing. The invention of the source to each of these types of communication is all put into one. It is a very efficient way to get in contact with a recipient. Skype can be accessed through a computer, mobile phone, and television. It uses the VoIP network and operates on a “peer-to-peer” model. The bandwidth efficiency and low costs VoIP types of communications such as Skype are the reason for gradual migration from traditional copper wire telephone systems. The idea of a unified communication system appeals to the daily person today whom is always searching to cut time and live effectively and efficiently.

  1. I use Skype all the time and think that it is a great leap in technology. To be able to talk to anyone anywhere face to face makes long distance alot easier. Now when Im away from one of my friends I can still talk to them directly with skype. This technology has become very popular and I look forward to seeing the advances in the future.

I think Skype has been revolutionary when it comes to computer mediated communication. Being able to see someone’s facial expressions and hear their tone of voice eliminates potential misunderstandings that commonly arose over IMing programs like AIM. Like you mentioned in your post, it’s ideal for video conferences if people can’t meet in person. It’s this type of communication that makes people feel more connected.

  3. i couldnt not live without skype now that i have it! it is so covenient and great to work with. I use skype at home while i chat friends in different states. I also use skype at work, which is at a boutiqe where we skype other locations to see if they have a certain dress rather than describing the outfit i can be completely accurate and get a customer the outfit they want in a timely manner. Skype is a great invention and isnt going anywhere. I have also used skype on my iphone by using facetime and chatting with others live and seeing their reactions!

  5. I personally use Skype all the time. My parents and sisters just recently moved to London and the rest of my family resides in Scotland. If it weren't for Skype I would be so devastated because I wouldn't be able to see my families faces. Skype makes it a whole lot easier to be away from friends and family. To think that a currently technology can keep a family close even when there is thousands of miles away, is amazing. I am definitely for any technology that allows loved ones to be close regardless the distance.

  6. It seems as communication technology has evolved over the past couple of decades as people have found more and more ways to communicate without being directly in front of each other. Telephones made it easy to communicate with both parties being in two different locations. Then email and text messages made communication allow for communication without an audible sound. Now, social networks allow a user to post a message without immediately needing a response from another. Skype, on the other hand, has taken communication back to the physical interaction even though there may be a large distance between the two users.

  7. I agree 100% I think the majority of people are making the switch from traditional copper wire telephone calls to other better types of communication technology like VoIP and cellular phones. Even my parents and grandparents opted to remove their land line. It seems like the only groups keeping land lines are small businesses and old folks.

New iPhones and iPads have a great feature called FaceTime that lets apple users communicate face to face. I notice some differences when FaceTiming versus a cell phone call. For example, I feel like I need to look presentable when I am communicating face to face. Whereas, it doesn't matter what I look like when I am just talking on the phone. I also notice FaceTime communication feels more intimate because you can see facial expressions of the person you are talking with.

  8. This medium of communication is wonderful for long distance calls or just to see friends that have traveled far from you. Easily you can share moments together with the fact that you can also see the person you are talking to. Skype also is cheap. It's use doesn't command huge prices simply internet access and someone to talk to :) I believe technology such as Skype brings people together in ways we could have never imagined 10 years ago.
